A little Nutracker for the season: Dance of the Reed Pipes
ALLSTATE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2012
A round of applause to all students who auditioned this year! The time and effort you put in was astounding.
Huge congratulations to Lauren B, who will be participating in the festival this spring!
Mrs. Barter graduated in 2001 with a Bachelors of Music in Music Education from the University of Southern Maine, studying under Jean Rosenblum. She was a member of the Strathclyde University Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, Scotland, has studied in Nova Scotia with Patricia Creighton (Nova Scotia Symphony), and has participated in the Boxwood Festival under Chris Norman. She has attended and participated in numerous masterclasses throughout New England (Alexa Still, Doriot Dwyer, Elizabeth Rowe, James Galway). She has also been a past adjudicator for regional district auditions, and the Kotzschmar Memorial Fund.
After college, Rachael began her musical journey as a band director in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and a beginning band instructor, teaching 150 students in her ensemble in southern Maine. Her instrumental knowledge makes for great collaboration with other band teachers, as she understands the constant-changing needs/curriculum in the public school systems.
Current Experience and Professional Development
Rachael is currently a freelance performer and soloist, engaged in chamber ensembles, and the Casco Bay Concert Band. She has recently been a flute instructor at the Southern Maine Music Accadey at USM, and a participant in the National Flute convention in New York City. She has taught privately for over 13 years. Students range from beginning players to adults, students who play in Portland Youth Ensembles, Allstate, and students who hold principal positions in district festivals.
There is a high level of devotion to continuous education on a yearly basis. Rachael is always in search for new information, pedagogy and practicing techniques, and inspiration- all things she eagerly passes along in her studio. For the past four years, her "professional development" has been motherhood, raising two beautiful daughters. She is excited to get back into national conventions, masterclasses, private instruction and graduate work in the Boston, Connecticut and NYC areas.
Rachael is a Kennebunk native and resides in town with her husband Tyler and daughters Emilie and Abigail.

$15.00 Recital Fee due in September and January. This covers all accompanist, space, rehearsal and reception costs. Students are expected to pay for any required lesson/method books and repertoire.
Method of Payment: Cash or check is due by the lesson time. Payment can be made weekly, monthly, or semesterly (Sept-Dec, Jan-June). There is a 10% discount for semester payments.
Absences and Snow Day Policies
If and when a student is juggling a sports schedule, exams, and other activities, it's understandable to have the occasional absence. I ask for a courtesy call/email 24 hours before the lesson in order to reschedule or cancel without a payment penalty. Sudden illness and special circumstances (at the teacher's discretion) will be waived as well. If a student is a "no show", I ask for the lesson to be honored with appropriate payment. Habitual no-shows and forgotton lessons will put that student's time slot in jeopardy, especially if there is a waiting list. In an event of a teacher absence, students are contacted immediately, and lessons will be rescheduled.
In an event of a potential snow day, parents and students will receive a phone call/email by noontime, determining the fate of lessons for the day. It will also be posted on the website. If the studio is closed, parents will have the option to cancel for that week, or to reschedule.
Performing is never required, but highly encouraged- even for the most introverted or beginning player. All recitals are relaxed, fun, non-competitive and supportive. Recitals can create wonderful memories, musical milestones, and also assess what has been covered in lessons. It can give a player quite a boost of confidence after being on stage!
